Traffic control Hervey Bay and Maryborough
In short: East Coast Traffic Control provides traffic control in Hervey Bay and Maryborough from our Hervey Bay depot, under Area Manager Jesse. We cover Fraser Coast Regional Council streets, Bruce Highway and Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road works, utility jobs in the Mary River catchment, and events such as the Hervey Bay Whale Festival, with plans designed to Queensland MUTCD Part 3.

Traffic control on the Fraser Coast
Hervey Bay and Maryborough are two different jobs twenty minutes apart. Hervey Bay is a coastal strip of retirees, tourists and school zones along the Esplanade and Boat Harbour Drive, where the work is council footpaths, water mains, subdivision access at Eli Waters and Nikenbah, and events that fill the foreshore. Maryborough is an older river city with a heritage CBD, timber and sugar industry traffic, and the Bruce Highway bypass on its western edge, where TMR safety works and the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road upgrade set the pace.
Our Hervey Bay crews cover both, plus Howard, Burrum Heads, Toogoom and Tiaro. The common thread is that Fraser Coast roads carry a lot of drivers who are not in a hurry and not local, which means clear advance signage and simple detours matter more here than almost anywhere else we work.
Roads and road authorities on the Fraser Coast
The Bruce Highway, Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road, Maryborough-Cooloola Road, Pialba-Burrum Heads Road and Torbanlea-Pialba Road are state-controlled roads under TMR's Wide Bay/Burnett District, which also covers Bundaberg and Gympie's northern fringe. Everything else, including the Esplanade, Boat Harbour Drive, Main Street Pialba and Maryborough's CBD streets, belongs to Fraser Coast Regional Council.
For TMR roads we design the traffic guidance scheme to TMR format and lodge the works permit. For council roads we work to Fraser Coast Regional Council's road works and event conditions. A lot of Hervey Bay work is utilities and subdivisions on council roads where the plan can be lodged quickly; a Bruce Highway job near Maryborough needs TMR design and permit lead time. See traffic guidance schemes for what we prepare.
Who we have worked for in Hervey Bay and Maryborough
In late 2023 our Fraser Coast crews provided traffic control for the installation of water quality and level monitors beneath roads across the Mary River catchment, a multi-site program with environmental specialists that ran through wet weather and flooded conditions at several locations. Council maintenance, reseals and footpath programs for Fraser Coast Regional Council are the backbone of the depot's work, and local crews who know the school zones and the Esplanade's foot traffic are part of why councils in Hervey Bay keep coming back to us.
Hervey Bay's Whale Festival is the big event of the year, and we plan event traffic around it the same way we do for coastal towns across our network: wider pedestrian detours, early VMS messaging, protected emergency routes and business access kept open. Our Sunshine Coast depot also sends crews north for emergency works near Maryborough.
How coverage works on the Fraser Coast
Our Hervey Bay depot is local to the Fraser Coast and the crews are local to Hervey Bay and Maryborough. Jesse is the Area Manager for both the Hervey Bay and Sunshine Coast depots, so if a job runs beyond what the local crew can staff, Sunshine Coast crews come north under the same manager. For TMA protected highway work the attenuator usually comes from the Sunshine Coast depot.
Howard, Burrum Heads, Toogoom and Tiaro are routine. Childers, Gin Gin and Bundaberg are travel jobs and are covered on our Bundaberg traffic control page. Our network operates 24/7 for night works and call-outs.
What to send for a Fraser Coast quote
- Site address, or road name and chainage for Bruce Highway and rural sites
- Whether the road is TMR or Fraser Coast Regional Council (tell us the road name if unsure)
- Dates, hours, day or night, and any event date the works must avoid
- The work and plant, including whether a footpath or shared path closes
- Whether you need a TMP or TGS designed, or already hold one
- Site contact, principal contractor and any council or TMR references
Common questions
Who approves traffic control on the Bruce Highway between Gympie and Maryborough?
TMR's Wide Bay/Burnett District for the Maryborough end, and TMR's North Coast District for the Gympie end; the Bruce Highway is state-controlled the whole way. We design the traffic guidance scheme to TMR format and lodge the works permit. Where a job spans the district boundary we confirm which office holds the permit.
Do you have a depot in Hervey Bay or do crews come from the Sunshine Coast?
We have a Hervey Bay depot with local crews, and Jesse manages it alongside the Sunshine Coast depot. Day-to-day Fraser Coast work is staffed locally. When a job needs more people or a TMA truck, Sunshine Coast crews and equipment come north under the same Area Manager.
Can you handle event traffic for the Whale Festival or foreshore events?
Yes. We plan event traffic for coastal towns across Queensland and NSW: pedestrian detours sized for crowds, early VMS messaging, protected emergency vehicle routes and business access kept open. Event plans go to Fraser Coast Regional Council ahead of the event. See the event traffic management checklist.
How quickly can you set up a council street job in Hervey Bay?
For a standard short-term setup on a council road, once the council notification is in place, the lead time is short and often a matter of days. A TMR road or a job near traffic signals needs a designed scheme and TMR permit first. Send the details and we will give you the real lead time.
Do you provide traffic control in Maryborough as well as Hervey Bay?
Yes. Maryborough, Tinana and Granville are covered by the same depot and crews, including Bruce Highway and Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road works and council jobs in the heritage CBD. Our crews have also supported emergency works near Maryborough with backup from the Sunshine Coast depot.
