Traffic control on the Sunshine Coast

Traffic control Sunshine Coast

In short: East Coast Traffic Control is headquartered at Maud Street, Maroochydore, and runs traffic control across the Sunshine Coast from there under Area Manager Jesse. Crews work daily from Caboolture and Brisbane's north to Noosa and Gympie, on Bruce Highway projects, Sunshine Coast Council and Noosa Shire streets, rail corridor works and events, with plans designed to Queensland MUTCD Part 3.

Traffic control on the Sunshine Coast, where ECTC started

The Sunshine Coast is where East Coast Traffic Control began in 1993 and where the company is still run from. It is also our widest-ranging depot. On a given day Maroochydore crews might be holding lanes on the Bruce Highway, setting up a detour in Gympie, managing a footpath upgrade on Ocean Street, running a TMA shift on the Sunshine Motorway, and covering a council job in Caboolture or Brisbane's northern suburbs.

The region's growth drives the work: the Bruce Highway upgrades, the Sunshine Coast rail corridor works, estate construction at Aura and Palmview, and a council capital program that never really stops. Add tourist traffic in Noosa and Mooloolaba, school zones everywhere, and a Christmas period that fills the Sunshine Motorway, and the planning has to be specific to the street, not generic.

Roads and road authorities on the Sunshine Coast

The Bruce Highway, Sunshine Motorway, Nicklin Way, Caloundra Road, Nambour Connection Road, Maroochydore Road, Steve Irwin Way and the David Low Way through Coolum are state-controlled roads under TMR's North Coast District, which runs from Caboolture to Gympie. Local streets belong to Sunshine Coast Council, Noosa Shire Council north of Peregian, Gympie Regional Council around Gympie, and City of Moreton Bay at Caboolture and Redcliffe.

For TMR roads we design the traffic guidance scheme to TMR format and lodge the works permit. For council roads we follow each council's road works and event permit conditions, and we know all four councils' processes. Gympie is where the North Coast District meets Wide Bay/Burnett, so Bruce Highway jobs north of Gympie may sit with the Maryborough office. See permits and road occupancy.

Who we have worked for on the Sunshine Coast and Gympie

A major job in the region was the Bruce Highway Cooroy to Curra Section D project for TMR, delivered by the Bielby-BMD joint venture. We supplied traffic management from late 2020 until the bypass opened in October 2024, across multiple locations on a site with 42 bridges at 23 locations along the Gympie bypass, with risks and layouts that change as each cut and fill moves.

On the event side, in June 2025 we supported Gympie Regional Council and the QRL at the Queensland Maroons Fan Day at Albert Park, managing access, signage and crowd flow from bump-in to pack-down. Our Sunshine Coast depot also holds long-term night shift TMA contracts, and in 2025 ECTC crew members completed TMA driver training and licensing so we can protect high-speed works with our own attenuators. The depot sends crews north to Hervey Bay and Bundaberg when needed and south into Brisbane's northern suburbs every week.

How coverage works from Maroochydore

Our head office and depot is at 3/30 Maud Street, Maroochydore, close to the Sunshine Motorway and Maroochydore Road. Jesse is the Area Manager and also looks after the Hervey Bay depot. The Maroochydore depot carries a large equipment pool, including TMA trucks, portable traffic signals and VMS boards, so larger jobs anywhere between Brisbane and Bundaberg draw on it.

Caloundra, Noosa, Nambour, Maleny and Beerwah are routine. Gympie, Caboolture, Redcliffe and North Lakes are regular travel jobs with start times confirmed at quote stage. For Brisbane south of the river see Brisbane traffic control. Our network operates 24/7, and this depot runs regular night shifts.

Common questions

Who approves traffic control on the Bruce Highway or Sunshine Motorway?

TMR's North Coast District approves traffic guidance schemes and works permits on state-controlled roads including the Bruce Highway, Sunshine Motorway, Nicklin Way and Caloundra Road. Sunshine Coast Council, Noosa Shire and Gympie Regional Council approve local streets. We tell you which applies when we scope the job, and lodge the scheme.

Do you provide TMA trucks for high-speed works on the Sunshine Coast?

Yes. Truck mounted attenuators are required on many state-controlled roads in 80 to 110 km/h zones, and ECTC crew members hold TMA driver accreditation. The Sunshine Coast depot runs long-term night TMA contracts, so attenuator shifts are quoted the same way as any other job. See night works.

Can you cover Gympie and the Bruce Highway north of the coast?

Yes. Gympie is a regular travel job from Maroochydore and we supplied the Bruce Highway Cooroy to Curra Section D project for TMR from late 2020 until it opened in October 2024. We also supported the Maroons Fan Day at Albert Park in 2025 for Gympie Regional Council. Start times are confirmed at quote stage.

Do you work in Brisbane's northern suburbs from the Sunshine Coast?

Yes. Caboolture, Morayfield, Redcliffe, North Lakes and Brisbane's north are serviced from Maroochydore every week, including the Narangba power works in 2025. South of the river, Logan and Ipswich are serviced from our Gold Coast depot. See Brisbane traffic control for how we split the city.

Can you manage traffic for a Sunshine Coast event or festival?

Yes. We build event traffic management plans for everything from community festivals in Maroochydore to regional shows and fan days. Event plans go to the relevant council ahead of the event. Our event traffic management checklist lists what organisers need to prepare.

Is the Sunshine Coast depot the right contact for a statewide or multi-depot job?

Yes. Head office is here, so a project that spans several depots, or a tender that needs a single point of contact, starts with the Maroochydore office and is then staffed from the depots nearest each site. Call 1300 011 203 or send the quote form.
