Traffic control on the Gold Coast

Traffic control Gold Coast

In short: East Coast Traffic Control runs traffic control on the Gold Coast from a local depot under Area Manager Richard, opened when we expanded into the Gold Coast and Northern NSW in 2025. We cover construction sites, M1 and TMR works, City of Gold Coast streets, events and hinterland storm recovery from Coomera to Coolangatta and Tweed Heads.

Road authority
TMR South Coast District, City of Gold Coast, Scenic Rim Regional Council and Tweed Shire Council (Transport for NSW across the border)

Traffic control on the Gold Coast: dense, fast and busy

The Gold Coast packs more construction into less road space than anywhere else we work. High-rise sites in Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach need crane lifts and concrete pours on streets that carry buses, trams, tourists and deliveries all day. Estate construction at Coomera and Pimpama pushes trucks onto the M1 interchanges. Council footpath, drainage and water programs run through suburbs where every second driver is looking for a park. And the light rail corridor along the Gold Coast Highway has its own interface rules.

That is why we opened here. In May 2025 ECTC expanded into the Gold Coast and Northern NSW with a local Area Manager and local crews, bringing the same depot model we run from Cairns to the Riverina. The brief is simple: a controller who knows that a Monday morning lane closure on Bundall Road is a different job from one on Tamborine Mountain Road.

Who approves works on Gold Coast roads

The approving authority follows road ownership. Many Gold Coast sites touch both a TMR road and a council street.

What we have done on the Gold Coast so far

Our Gold Coast work is newer than our Queensland regional work, so we would rather show you what we have done than promise what we have not. When Tropical Cyclone Alfred crossed the coast in March 2025 our crews mobilised into the Gold Coast hinterland, where fallen trees and downed powerlines had cut narrow forested roads, to run detours and traffic around recovery crews so clearing could start. Before that, in late 2023, we managed parking, pedestrian safety and vehicle movements for Autosports Group's Lamborghini showcase at Currumbin Beach.

Since the 2025 expansion the depot has been building its civil, council and event book across the city, and our Ventia powerline work extends here as it does across every Queensland depot.

How coverage works on the Gold Coast

Richard is the Area Manager for the Gold Coast and Northern NSW and the person who scopes your job and builds the crew. Crews are Gold Coast based and carry signs, cones, portable signals and VMS boards from the local depot; for TMA protected works and very large jobs we bring equipment and crews from our Sunshine Coast head office, which also holds Brisbane's northern suburbs. Logan, Beenleigh and Ipswich are covered from this depot.

Across the border, Tweed Heads, Kingscliff and Murwillumbah are run by the same depot but under NSW rules: controllers hold NSW accreditation and plans follow Transport for NSW's Traffic Control at Work Sites manual. See Northern NSW traffic control.

What to send for a Gold Coast quote

  • Site address and whether the road is TMR, City of Gold Coast or (for Tweed) Transport for NSW or Tweed Shire
  • Dates, hours, day or night, and whether the works fall in Schoolies or the Christmas embargo
  • The task: crane lift, pour, excavation, footpath closure, event, power works
  • Any light rail or bus route interface, and whether traffic signals are within the site
  • Whether you need a TMP or TGS designed, or already hold one
  • Site contact, principal contractor and any permit references you already have

Common questions

Who approves traffic control on the M1 or Gold Coast Highway?

TMR's South Coast District, because the Pacific Motorway, Gold Coast Highway and the major connecting roads are state-controlled. City of Gold Coast approves local streets. Works on the Gold Coast Highway near the light rail corridor carry extra interface conditions. We identify which approvals apply when we scope the job and prepare the scheme to TMR format.

Do you need a different licence to work in Tweed Heads?

Yes. Queensland and NSW traffic control accreditations are separate and a Queensland ticket is not valid in NSW. Our Gold Coast and Northern NSW crews include NSW accredited controllers, and Tweed jobs are planned to Transport for NSW's Traffic Control at Work Sites manual. See NSW traffic control licences.

Can you do crane lifts and road closures in Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach?

Yes. Short-term full closures for crane lifts need a City of Gold Coast permit, or a TMR permit on the Gold Coast Highway, plus a traffic guidance scheme with pedestrian management and bus route diversions. We design and implement both. Lead time depends on the permit, so book the traffic control before you book the crane.

Do you cover Logan, Beenleigh and the hinterland from the Gold Coast?

Yes. Logan, Beenleigh, Yatala and Ormeau are serviced from the Gold Coast depot, as are Tamborine Mountain, Canungra and the hinterland roads we worked after Cyclone Alfred. Brisbane's northern suburbs are serviced from our Sunshine Coast head office; see Brisbane traffic control.

How long has ECTC worked on the Gold Coast?

We opened our Gold Coast and Northern NSW operation in May 2025 with a local Area Manager and crews, after more than 30 years in regional Queensland and NSW. The company behind the depot is ISO certified and owned by ASX-listed TIP Group.
