Traffic control Young
In short: East Coast Traffic Control runs traffic control in Young and the Hilltops from a depot at Chillingworks Road, Young, led by Area Manager Amy. We took over an established Young traffic control business in 2022 and kept its crews. Traffic control in Young and the Hilltops
Young is where ECTC's NSW operation started. In November 2022 we acquired the assets of a long-established Young traffic control business and re-employed its staff, which gave the Hilltops a crew that already knew every council road, and gave us a base for the South West Slopes, the Riverina and the Central West. The Young depot remains the base that our Wagga Wagga, Tumbarumba and Dubbo depots work alongside.
The work is regional NSW in miniature. Hilltops Council reseals and footpath programs in Young, Harden and Boorowa. Transport for NSW work on the Olympic Highway and Burley Griffin Way, including the Wallendbeen Bridge replacement over the rail corridor. Utility connections in new estates. Cherry orchards that put pickers' cars and trucks on Boorowa Road from November. And events, from the National Cherry Festival street parade on the first weekend of December to a 4,500 person concert at the Showgrounds.
Roads and road authorities in the Hilltops
The Olympic Highway through Young, Burley Griffin Way through Harden and Wallendbeen, the Lachlan Valley Way to Cowra and the Hume Highway at Gundagai and Yass are state roads under Transport for NSW's South Region. Local streets in Young, Harden, Murrumburrah and Boorowa belong to Hilltops Council. Cootamundra and Gundagai are Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council, Cowra is Cowra Shire, Grenfell is Weddin Shire and Temora is Temora Shire.
Any work affecting travel lanes on a state road, or traffic signals on any road, needs a Transport for NSW road occupancy licence and a traffic control plan to the Traffic Control at Work Sites (TCAWS) manual. Council roads need the council's own permit. We prepare the plan, advise on the licence and tell you which applies when we scope the job. See permits and road occupancy.
Who we have worked for in Young and the South West Slopes
On 1 March 2025 our Young crew managed traffic for the Tones and I concert at Young Showgrounds: 4,500 people through a single-entry venue, in and out, without a queue backing onto the highway. In September 2024 we supported works on the Transport for NSW Wallendbeen Bridge project on Burley Griffin Way, where prestressed Super-T girders were lifted onto the new road-over-rail bridge. In 2024 we held traffic control for council road works in Cowra and across the Central West under council partnerships.
When the 2022 floods hit the South West Slopes, our crews worked around the clock with the region's councils and Transport for NSW to keep passable routes open as water levels changed by the hour, which is covered on our flooded roads in the South Western Slopes project page. Off the road, we sponsor the Young Junior Rugby League Cherrypickers girls under 14 team.
How coverage works from the Young depot
Our Young depot is at 2 Chillingworks Road, Young. Amy is the Area Manager and the person who scopes your job and assembles the crew. Crews live in Young and the surrounding towns and carry signs, cones, portable traffic signals and VMS boards from the depot. Harden, Boorowa, Cootamundra and Wallendbeen are routine. Cowra, Grenfell, Temora, Gundagai and Yass are travel jobs with start times confirmed at quote stage.
For larger jobs the Young depot draws on our Wagga Wagga and Tumbarumba depots, so a Riverina-wide program has one contact and three crew pools. Controllers hold NSW accreditation and plans follow Transport for NSW's TCAWS manual; see NSW traffic control licences.

Common questions
Who approves traffic control on the Olympic Highway or Burley Griffin Way?
Transport for NSW, because both are state roads. Any work affecting travel lanes needs a TfNSW road occupancy licence and a TCAWS compliant traffic control plan. Hilltops Council approves works on local streets in Young, Harden and Boorowa. Sites that touch both, for example a street that meets the highway, need both approvals.
Is the Young depot a real local crew or a satellite of Wagga Wagga?
It is the original. ECTC acquired an established Young traffic control business in 2022 and kept its local staff; the Wagga Wagga and Tumbarumba depots work alongside it. Amy manages the Young depot, crews are local to the Hilltops, and the depot carries its own equipment. The three depots share crews for larger jobs.
Can you manage traffic for the National Cherry Festival or a Young Showgrounds event?
Yes. We ran traffic for the 4,500 person Tones and I concert at the Showgrounds in March 2025, and we work with Hilltops Council and event organisers across the region. Event plans need a council permit lodged well ahead. Our event traffic management checklist lists what organisers should prepare.
Do you cover Cowra, Cootamundra and Temora from Young?
Yes. Cootamundra is routine, and Cowra, Grenfell and Temora are travel jobs with a confirmed start time in the quote. We held traffic control for council road works in Cowra in 2024. For programs longer than a few days we base a crew in the town rather than driving in daily.
What happens when roads flood in the Hilltops during a job?
We stand crews down safely, then work with the council and Transport for NSW on closures and detours as levels change. In the 2022 floods our South West Slopes crews did that around the clock to keep passable routes open for supplies and the public. Build weather days into any program through the wetter months.
