What the job involved
The Cairns Western Arterial Road is the western link between Cairns' northern suburbs and the Captain Cook Highway. The duplication upgraded the section between Redlynch Connector Road and the highway to a four-lane dual carriageway and included two major structures: duplication of the rail overpass at Redlynch and duplication of the Kamerunga Bridge over the Barron River.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads contracted the $300 million project to Albem Constructions. ECTC supplied the traffic management from our Cairns depot.
The challenge
Duplicating a live arterial means building the new carriageway beside traffic that keeps using the old one, then switching lanes across as each stage finishes. Bridge duplication adds crane lifts and girder deliveries on a road with no easy detour, and the rail overpass work had to fit around the rail corridor.
All of it sat in a Far North Queensland wet season cycle, where the Barron River and local flooding can change a plan overnight.
What ECTC did
We provided traffic management to support each element of the works: the carriageway upgrade, the Redlynch overpass duplication and the Kamerunga Bridge duplication, with local Cairns crews for each stage of the works.
The road now runs as a four-lane dual carriageway from Redlynch Connector Road to the Captain Cook Highway.
