Capricorn Highway and Bruce Highway reseal program

In short: From late 2022 into early 2023, East Coast Traffic Control's Central Queensland teams provided traffic control and traffic planning on the Capricorn Highway and Bruce Highway reseal program between Rockhampton and Emerald. The contractor, Colas Qld, delivered the works safely, on budget and on time for the Queensland road authority.

What the job involved

Reseal programs move. A spray seal crew works a section, the road has to reopen, and the whole operation shifts to the next section, often the same day. Over six months the works travelled the Capricorn Highway and the Bruce Highway corridor between Rockhampton and Emerald, which meant a different setup on a different stretch of state highway week after week.

ECTC's Central Queensland teams, run from our Rockhampton depot, provided both the on-road traffic control and the traffic planning behind it, so the plans and the crews came from the same people.

The challenge

Highway reseals mix high-speed through traffic, including road trains and mining traffic on the Capricorn Highway, with a work zone that relocates constantly. Every move needs a compliant setup, fresh signage distances for the posted speed, and crews who can pack down and set up again without holding the sealing crew up.

The program also ran through the Central Queensland wet season, when heat, storms and sudden changes to the sealing schedule all land on the traffic crew first.

What ECTC did

We prepared the traffic planning for each section and staffed the works with local crews for the full six months, from the end of 2022 into early 2023. Because the crews were based in the region, the program could change its sequence without waiting on people to travel in.

Colas Qld delivered the reseal program on budget, safely and on time for the Queensland road authority.
