Flooded roads in the South Western Slopes, NSW

In short: In 2022, high rainfall and flooding hit New South Wales. Councils across the South Western Slopes, working with the state road authority, coordinated traffic through less affected, passable roads. East Coast Traffic Control's teams worked around the clock, responding immediately to new water levels that cut major transport routes, so supplies, deliveries and the public could still get through.

What the job involved

2022 brought high rainfall and flooding to New South Wales. In the South Western Slopes, around Young and the surrounding shires, floodwater cut major transport routes. Councils in the region, in partnership with the state road authority, coordinated traffic through the road networks that were still passable.

ECTC's crews, based at our Young depot, provided the traffic control that made those coordinated detours work on the ground.

The challenge

Flood traffic control is reactive by nature. Water levels rise and fall overnight, a road that was open at dusk is cut by dawn, and the detour that was working needs to move again. The crews have to be available at all hours and close enough to respond immediately, and the setups have to be right the first time because people are already driving towards the water.

The region's roads are also freight routes. Keeping a workable way through was not only about residents but about supplies and deliveries reaching towns that were otherwise cut off.

What ECTC did

Our teams worked around the clock, responding immediately to new water levels that cut major routes, closing roads safely and redirecting traffic along the passable network the councils had agreed. Because the crews are local to the region they could be on the water's edge quickly, and they knew which back roads would hold.

The outcome was a workable way through for the whole event: supplies and deliveries kept moving, and the public could reach their destinations.
