Toolooa Street, Gladstone: road rehabilitation works
In short: East Coast Traffic Control supported Loftus Contracting for approximately six months on the Toolooa Street road rehabilitation in Gladstone, a Gladstone Regional Council project backed by State Government assistance. The works involved excavation and new road layers ahead of asphalt sealing, plus construction of a new sewer rising main to replace ageing infrastructure.

What the job involved
Toolooa Street is a busy Gladstone road, and this was a full rehabilitation rather than a surface fix. The contractor, Loftus Contracting, excavated the existing pavement, built new road layers and then asphalt sealed the finished surface. The same works also included a new sewer rising main, so the trench work ran alongside the road rebuild.
The project was delivered for Gladstone Regional Council with State Government assistance, and ECTC provided the traffic control for approximately six months from our Gladstone depot, which is in Toolooa.
The challenge
Rehabilitation works are staged. Excavation, pavement, sewer and asphalt each need different lane arrangements, and residents and businesses along the street need access the whole time. The traffic setup has to change with each stage without creating confusion for the people who drive the street every day.
Asphalt and sewer works also bring heavy vehicle movements in and out of the live lane, which is where most of the risk sits on an urban job.
What ECTC did
We staffed the works with local Gladstone crews for the length of the project and adjusted the on-road setup as the contractor moved through each stage, keeping property access open and heavy vehicle movements controlled.
The result was a rebuilt road and new sewer main delivered for council.
