Traffic control Albury

In short: East Coast Traffic Control provides traffic control in Albury, Lavington, Thurgoona and the NSW side of the border, mobilised from our Wagga Wagga and Tumbarumba depots. We cover Hume Highway and Riverina Highway works, Albury City Council streets, Thurgoona's growth corridor and the Nexus precinct with NSW accredited controllers and plans to the TfNSW Traffic Control at Work Sites manual.

Traffic control in Albury: the Hume, the border and a city still growing

Albury's traffic control work comes from three directions. The Hume Highway runs past the city as a 110 km/h freeway carrying the Sydney to Melbourne freight task, and any shoulder, lane or ramp closure on it is a high-speed job with truck mounted attenuator protection and long advance warning. The Riverina Highway and Olympic Highway bring regional traffic in from Corowa and Culcairn. And inside the city, Albury City Council's capital program, the Thurgoona and Wirlinga growth corridor and the Nexus industrial precinct near the airport generate subdivision roadworks, utility connections and intersection upgrades.

Then there is the border. Wodonga is a few minutes away but it is in Victoria, with its own road authority and its own traffic controller accreditation. Our crews are NSW accredited and work the NSW side; we do not pretend a NSW ticket is valid in Victoria, and we will tell you plainly if a site crosses the Murray.

Roads and road authorities around Albury

The Hume Highway, Riverina Highway, Olympic Highway, Wagga Road through Lavington and the Lincoln Causeway to the border are state roads under Transport for NSW's South Region. Local streets in Albury, Lavington, Thurgoona and East Albury belong to Albury City Council. Jindera, Holbrook, Culcairn and Henty are Greater Hume Shire; Corowa and Howlong are Federation Council.

Any work affecting travel lanes on a state road, or traffic signals on any road, needs a Transport for NSW road occupancy licence with a traffic control plan to the Traffic Control at Work Sites (TCAWS) manual. Council roads need the council's own permit. On the Hume Highway, Transport for NSW's conditions for high-speed works, including attenuator protection and night work windows, shape the plan before anything else does. See permits and road occupancy.

What we do in Albury and how we staff it

We deliver stop and slow and lane closures, road closures and detours, pedestrian management, and the design and implementation of traffic control plans for civil construction, road maintenance, utilities and infrastructure works around Albury. We plan every job around the safety of your workers, motorists and pedestrians, and on the Hume that means attenuators, extended tapers and night windows, because a 110 km/h freeway does not forgive a short setup.

We do not have an Albury depot and we would rather say so than pretend. Albury is mobilised from our Wagga Wagga depot under Craig, about an hour and a half up the Olympic Highway, and our Tumbarumba depot under Ruby, about the same distance east. For programs longer than a few days we base a crew in Albury for the duration.

Which depot you deal with

For most Albury work your contact is Craig at the Wagga Wagga depot. For jobs on the eastern side, toward Jingellic, Tooma and the upper Murray, it may be Ruby at Tumbarumba. Your quote states which depot is staffing the job and the confirmed start time.

Controllers hold NSW accreditation and plans follow the TfNSW TCAWS manual; see NSW traffic control licences. See Wagga Wagga traffic control and Tumbarumba traffic control for the two depots.

What to send for an Albury quote

  • Site address, or highway name and chainage, and whether the road is Transport for NSW or council
  • Confirmation the site is on the NSW side of the border (Wodonga sites need Victorian accreditation)
  • Dates, hours, day or night, and duration, so we can decide whether to base a crew in Albury
  • The work and plant, and whether traffic signals, the freeway or the rail line are within the site
  • Whether you already hold a road occupancy licence or need help applying
  • Site contact, principal contractor and any TfNSW or council references

Common questions

Does ECTC have a depot in Albury?

No. Albury is mobilised from our Wagga Wagga depot, about an hour and a half away, and our Tumbarumba depot to the east. We confirm the start time and staffing depot in the quote and base a crew in Albury for programs longer than a few days.

Can your controllers work in Wodonga as well as Albury?

Our crews are NSW accredited and work the NSW side of the border. Victoria has its own traffic controller accreditation, so check what Victoria accepts. If your project crosses the Murray, tell us; we will be straight about what we can staff. ECTC does not issue tickets in either state; registered training organisations do.

Who approves traffic control on the Hume Highway at Albury?

Transport for NSW's South Region. Any work affecting travel lanes on the Hume, Riverina or Olympic Highways needs a TfNSW road occupancy licence and a TCAWS compliant traffic control plan, and high-speed works on the Hume usually require truck mounted attenuator protection and night windows. Albury City Council approves works on local streets.

Do you cover Thurgoona, Jindera, Holbrook and Corowa?

Yes. Thurgoona and Lavington are part of any Albury job. Jindera, Holbrook, Culcairn and Henty sit on the run from Wagga Wagga and are quoted as travel jobs with a confirmed start time; Corowa and Howlong the same. Each council has its own permit conditions, which we handle as part of the job.

How much lead time do you need for an Albury job?

A council street job with a standard plan is staffed once the council permit is in and the Area Manager has confirmed crew and start time. A Hume Highway or signals job needs the traffic control plan prepared and a Transport for NSW road occupancy licence approved first, and that timing sits with TfNSW.
