In short: East Coast Traffic Control provides traffic control in Griffith, Leeton, Narrandera and the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, mobilised from our Wagga Wagga depot under Area Manager Craig. Traffic control in the MIA: long roads and harvest trucks
Griffith is the centre of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, and the roads here exist to move produce. Citrus, wine grapes, rice, almonds, cotton and poultry all leave town on trucks, along the Kidman Way north to the Mid-Western Highway and south to the Sturt, and along Burley Griffin Way east to Temora and Young. Away from the highways the roads are long, straight, flat and fast, bordered by irrigation channels, and a traffic control plan has to allow for a driver who has seen nothing but open road for twenty minutes before your site appears.
Our work in Griffith is mostly road maintenance and resealing, council street and drainage programs, utility connections, and traffic control for irrigation infrastructure works where channels, pipelines and regulators cross roads. We plan each job around the harvest calendar and the realities of high-speed rural roads, to Transport for NSW's Traffic Control at Work Sites (TCAWS) manual.
Roads and road authorities in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area
The Kidman Way, Burley Griffin Way, Sturt Highway through Narrandera and Darlington Point, Newell Highway through Narrandera and West Wyalong, and the Irrigation Way between Griffith and Leeton are state roads under Transport for NSW's South Region. Griffith's streets and the villages of Yenda, Yoogali and Hanwood belong to Griffith City Council. Leeton and Narrandera have their own shire councils, and Coleambally and Darlington Point sit with Murrumbidgee Council. Hay is Hay Shire.
Any work affecting travel lanes on a state road, or traffic signals on any road, needs a Transport for NSW road occupancy licence with a TCAWS compliant plan. Council roads need the council's own permit. Works on irrigation channel crossings often involve the irrigation corporation as a third party with its own access conditions. See permits and road occupancy.
What we do in Griffith and how we staff it
We deliver stop and slow and lane closures, road closures and detours, pedestrian management in Griffith's CBD, and the design and implementation of traffic control plans for road maintenance, resealing, civil construction, utilities and irrigation infrastructure works across the MIA. Long rural reseal programs are the typical Griffith job: a crew moving with the works along a council road for a week or more, with harvest trucks coming through at speed.
We do not have a Griffith depot and we would rather say so. Griffith is mobilised from our Wagga Wagga depot under Craig, about two hours east on the Sturt Highway, with Young and Tumbarumba behind it for larger jobs. For programs longer than a few days we base a crew in Griffith or Leeton for the duration, which is how most MIA work is run.
Which depot you deal with
Your contact for Griffith is Craig at the Wagga Wagga depot. Call 1300 011 203 and the office will route you, or send the quote form and Wagga Wagga will respond. Your quote states the confirmed start time and whether the crew will be based locally. Leeton, Narrandera, Yenda, Hanwood and Darlington Point are covered on the same basis; Hay and West Wyalong are longer runs.
Controllers hold NSW accreditation and plans follow the TfNSW TCAWS manual; see NSW traffic control licences. See Wagga Wagga traffic control for the depot that staffs this region.
What to send for a Griffith or MIA quote
- Site location: road name and distance from the nearest town, and whether the road is Transport for NSW or council
- Dates, hours, day or night, and duration, so we can decide whether to base a crew locally
- The work and plant, and whether harvest trucks, machinery or an irrigation channel crossing are involved
- Whether you already hold a road occupancy licence or need help applying
- Whether you need a traffic control plan prepared, or already hold one
- Site contact, principal contractor and any TfNSW, council or irrigation corporation references
Common questions
Does ECTC have a depot in Griffith?
No. Griffith is mobilised from our Wagga Wagga depot about two hours east, and we base a crew in Griffith or Leeton for programs longer than a few days.
Who approves traffic control on the Kidman Way or Burley Griffin Way?
Transport for NSW's South Region, because both are state roads. Any work affecting travel lanes needs a TfNSW road occupancy licence and a TCAWS compliant traffic control plan. Griffith City Council approves works on local streets and village roads, and Leeton, Narrandera and Murrumbidgee councils approve theirs.
Can you plan a rural reseal program around harvest traffic?
Yes. That is the typical MIA job. We time setups around truck movements, extend advance warning distances for drivers coming off long straight runs, and keep the plan moving with the works along the road. Tell us which crop is moving and when, and the plan will reflect it.
Do you cover Leeton, Narrandera and Hay?
Yes. Leeton and Narrandera are on the run from Wagga Wagga and are quoted as travel jobs with a confirmed start time. Hay is a longer run on the Sturt Highway, and for anything beyond a day or two we base a crew in the town. Each council has its own permit conditions, which we handle as part of the job.
How much lead time do you need for a Griffith job?
A council road job with a standard plan is staffed once the council permit is in and the Area Manager has confirmed crew and start time. A Kidman Way or Sturt Highway job needs the traffic control plan prepared and a Transport for NSW road occupancy licence approved first, and that timing sits with TfNSW.
