Traffic control in Batemans Bay: Canberra's beach
Batemans Bay is where Canberra goes on holiday. Every Friday night in summer the Kings Highway brings the capital down the Clyde Mountain, and the Princes Highway through town carries holidaymakers, caravans and heavy vehicles on the same two lanes. Over Christmas and Easter the population multiplies, the town centre fills with pedestrians, and a lane closure on Beach Road at the wrong hour stops the whole town. Traffic control here is as much about timing as it is about cones.
The work is Eurobodalla Shire Council street, drainage and footpath programs in Batemans Bay, Moruya and Narooma, Transport for NSW maintenance and safety works on the Princes and Kings Highways, utility connections in the growing coastal villages, and event traffic for the markets, festivals and sporting events that run through the season. We plan every job around peak periods, pedestrian-heavy centres and access for local businesses, to Transport for NSW's Traffic Control at Work Sites (TCAWS) manual.
Roads and road authorities in the Eurobodalla
The Princes Highway and the Kings Highway, including the bridges over the Clyde River at Batemans Bay and Nelligen, are state roads under Transport for NSW's South Region. Local streets in Batemans Bay, Batehaven, Moruya, Tuross Head and Narooma, and Beach Road along the coast, belong to Eurobodalla Shire Council. Ulladulla, north of the shire boundary, is Shoalhaven City Council.
Any work affecting travel lanes on a state road, or traffic signals on any road, needs a Transport for NSW road occupancy licence with a TCAWS compliant plan. Council roads need Eurobodalla Shire Council's own permit, and the council restricts works in the town centres over the holiday peaks. Event road closures need a council event approval with the traffic management plan attached. See permits and road occupancy.
What we do on the South Coast and how we staff it
We deliver stop and slow and lane closures, road closures and detours, pedestrian management, event traffic management and the design and implementation of traffic control plans for civil construction, road maintenance, utilities and community events. Tourist towns are a specialty across our network, from Noosa and Hervey Bay to Byron Bay: wider pedestrian detours, early VMS messaging, protected emergency routes and business access kept open, so a works site outside a cafe does not close the cafe.
We do not have a Batemans Bay depot and we would rather say so. The South Coast is the longest reach in our Southern NSW network; our depots at Young and Tumbarumba are three to four hours away. For that reason we do not quote one-day Batemans Bay jobs as if we were local. For programs of a few days or more we base a crew on the coast for the duration, confirm the start time when we quote, and staff the job with NSW accredited controllers who stay until it is done.
Which depot you deal with
Your contact for Batemans Bay is Amy at the Young depot, which covers the Southern Tablelands and the Kings Highway corridor. Call 1300 011 203 and the office will route you, or send the quote form and Young will respond. Your quote states the confirmed start time and the locally based crew arrangement. Moruya, Narooma, Nelligen, Mogo and Broulee are covered on the same basis; Ulladulla is the northern end of the run.
Controllers hold NSW accreditation and plans follow the TfNSW TCAWS manual; see NSW traffic control licences. See Goulburn traffic control for the inland end of the Kings Highway and Young traffic control for the depot.
What to send for a Batemans Bay or Eurobodalla quote
- Site address, or highway name and chainage, and whether the road is Transport for NSW or Eurobodalla Shire Council
- Dates, hours, day or night, and duration, so we can plan a locally based crew
- Whether the works fall in the Christmas or Easter peak, when council restricts town centre works
- The work and plant, and whether pedestrians, a foreshore or an event are involved
- Whether you already hold a road occupancy licence or event approval, or need help applying
- Site contact, principal contractor or event organiser, and any TfNSW or council references

Common questions
Does ECTC have a depot in Batemans Bay?
No. The South Coast is the longest reach in our Southern NSW network, three to four hours from our Young and Tumbarumba depots. We do not quote one-day Batemans Bay jobs as if we were local; for programs of a few days or more we base a crew on the coast and confirm the start time in the quote.
Who approves traffic control on the Princes Highway or Kings Highway at Batemans Bay?
Transport for NSW's South Region, because both are state roads. Any work affecting travel lanes needs a TfNSW road occupancy licence and a TCAWS compliant traffic control plan. Eurobodalla Shire Council approves works on local streets including Beach Road, and issues event approvals for road closures in the town centres.
Can you work in Batemans Bay over the Christmas holidays?
Only within the restrictions Eurobodalla Shire Council and Transport for NSW place on holiday works, which rule out most town centre and Princes Highway lane closures between Christmas and late January. Emergency and utility works still happen, with pedestrian management sized for the crowds. We will tell you early what is realistic rather than after you have programmed it.
Can you manage traffic for a South Coast event or market?
Yes. Event traffic in a tourist town needs a council event approval with a traffic management plan covering closures, pedestrian routes, business access and emergency paths, lodged well ahead. We plan and implement event traffic across NSW and Queensland. Our event traffic management checklist lists what organisers should prepare.
Do you cover Moruya, Narooma and Ulladulla?
Yes. Moruya and Narooma are in Eurobodalla Shire and covered on the same basis as Batemans Bay, with a locally based crew for anything beyond a day or two. Ulladulla is in Shoalhaven City Council's area at the northern end of our run, with its own permit conditions, which we handle as part of the job.
